Griggs Taxi Service 1946

Griggs Taxi Service was established sometime in the mid-1940's by Charles V. Griggs. The company is mentioned in Polk's Directory for Madera in 1946. At the time, the Griggs family was living at 312 North M St., while the company was located at 6 East Yosemite Avenue.

Charles, born 15 September 1898, was a native of Texas, and died in Madera on 17 February 1966 at the age of 67. His wife, Maryanne May Stalians Griggs, was born in the Indian Territory, Oklahoma on 10 December 1901. She died in Fresno on 1 March 1995 at the age of 94. May was a local seamstress, and also worked alongside her husband in Madera as an agent for Santa Fe Trailways, and, from 1961-1965, for the Greyhound Bus Company. She was a member of the Women's Improvement Club and the Soroptomist Club.

Charles and May moved to Madera around 1940-1941 with their two children, Elton and Avis. The family attended the local First Baptist Church. Elton was born in Lubbock, Texas on 22 November 1922, and died there on 5 April 1999. He served in the US Navy during the Second World War, and worked for the US Postal Service in his home town until retirement. Avis Griggs Cereghino was a native of Elk City, Oklahoma. She was an alumnus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University (class of 1941). Avis was a resident of Madera for 60 years. In 1946, she worked for Pacific Gas & Electric, before becoming a teacher at Sierra Vista School. Like her mother, she was a member of the Women's Improvement Club, and was also a past president of the Emblem Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Avis was also a member of the Madera Historical Society and the California Retired Teachers Association. She passed away on 1 August 2008 in a Sacramento hospital at the age of 89.
