member of the Women's Improvement Club
and the Soroptomist Club.

Charles and May moved to Madera around 1940-1941
with their two children, Elton and Avis. The family attended the
local First Baptist Church. Elton was born in Lubbock, Texas on
22 November 1922, and died there on 5 April 1999. He served in

Postal Service in his home town until retirement. Avis Griggs
Cereghino was a native of Elk City, Oklahoma. She was an alumnus
of Southwestern Oklahoma State University (class of 1941). Avis
was a resident of Madera for 60 years. In 1946, she worked for

Vista School. Like her mother, she was a member of the Women's
Improvement Club, and was also a past president of the Emblem
Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Avis was also a member
