George Frederick Heiskell 1778-1836

George Frederick Heiskell was born on 5 May 1778, the son of Frederick Heiskell and Catherine Von Steidinger, in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. He died on 23 November 1836 in Hardin, Kentury, and is buried there.

George Frederick Heiskell was baptized in St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Fry in Hagerstown on February 15/16, 1802. Sarah was born about 1783 in Virginia.

The Heiskells settled in a little community in Knox County, Tennessee, on Bull Run Creek, which became known as Heiskell's Station, then just Heiskell. They later moved up the creek to Beard Valley, which became part of Union County, residing on Ailor Gap Road (later known as Beard Valley Rd.)

George and Sarah had six children:

1. George Lewis HEISKELL born ca. 1802 in W. Virginia. Death: 6 Jan 1864 in Lyon District, Preston County, W Va. According to the 1850 census, George Lewis was a farmer in Marion County. No children by his first wife (Mary Critchfield: married: 2 Feb 1824 in Harrison, Va.), but had 7 children by his second wife, Anna Ferrell. He married Anna on 21 Aug 1831 in , Monongalia County, Va.

1. Sarah A(nn) b. ca. 1832. married 1) William J. Wright 12 June 1851 in Marion County, W. Va. 2) George Marten.

2. Ira W. born 1834. Married Mary Ellen Hammer on 6 March 1857. He was a laborer, according to the 1850 census.

3. Harrison [T.] B. b 21 Jan 1836. Married 1) Elizabeth [C.] Susan Bunner on 8 Mar 1857 in Taylor County, Va. 2) Emily Murphy on 4 June 1894. By his first wife he had Sarah Jane Heiskell, b. ca. 1859; Martha J. Heiskell, born ca. 1861; Amos Heiskell, born ca. 1862; Samantha [E.] Heiskell, born ca. 1864. Their home in 1870 and 1880 was Lyon, Preston, West Virginia. Harrison was a farmer.

4. Maria J. (aka Mary Jane) b. ca. 1837. Married 11 Oct 1856 to Squire Huffman.

5. Robert Lewis Heiskell: born 5 May 1838. Death: 12 Apr 1893. Buried in Hayhurst Cem., Winfield, Marion, W Va. He married Nancy A. Layman (Leyman) on 18 April 1861. Nancy was b: 21 Aug 1843 in , Marion, Va. Their children are:
Thomas Erwin HEISKELL b: 12 May 1877 in Fairmont, Marion, W Va. He died on 10 Mar 1939 in Howesville, , W Va. He is the twin of Charles E(rwin) below. He married Dora Mae Smith, and had a daughter Ruby Vendola Heiskell (b: 7 Nov 1904 in Reedsville, , W Va. Died 27 Oct 1976 in Kingwood, Preston, W Va. Buried: Reedsville, Preston,W Va.)

2 There is an Edwin D. Heiskell, listed in the Tennessee state gazetteer and business directory for 1860-61, Issue 1 by John L. Mitchell (p.325), living in Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee, whose occupation was a cabinet maker. The Chancery Records of Monroe County contain the following: (No.492) Filed 24 Nov 1873. Mary C. Heiskell by next friend Samuel Steele vs E.D. Heiskell et al. E.D. and Mary C. are husband and wife. Samuel Steel, 79 in 1875, is brother of Mary C. File contains copy of Will of Mary Steel and also Edwin Heiskell's Cert. of Discharge from Bankruptcy.
