Happenings at the Library

The library is constantly looking for new ways to bring out the best in local culture.
The kids can enjoy preschool story time every Thursday between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Summer reading programs for K-8. With occasional poetry presentations, folk concerts, lectures, local art exhibits and the sounds of their grand piano. Everyone should find something to appreciate at the library.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Oakhurst Branch Library is to provide a balanced, accurate, and up-to-date collection of books and other materials, as well as professional information services, for the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of the community.

BRIEF HISTORY

In 1911, after the State passed a law requiring counties to establish free public libraries, a library branch was opened in what was then called Fresno Flats. Before an actual library was opened in the Oakhurst area in 1960, there were tiny branches located all over the mountain area. The one in the Oakhurst community was located in the Oakhurst Market. The present library was built in 1977 with federal revenue-sharing funds, and replaced a very small library housed in an old building shared with the Sierra Justice Court in use since 1960 (this building, originally the Fresno Flats Schoolhouse built in 1874, is now located at Fresno Flats Historical Park). A 1500 sq. ft. addition was built in 1992 with monies raised by FOBL, a matching-funds grant from LSCA, and Madera County.

FOBL

Friends of the Oakhurst Branch Library (FOBL) is a volunteer organization that exists solely to assist the Library to better serve our community. FOBL raises funds for programs sponsored by the Library and not covered by the County Budget.
