American War Mothers

1934 stamp commemorating American War Mothers

American War Mothers is a national patriotic organization whose members are mothers of children who have served, or who are serving, in the United States Armed Services during times of conflict. It was founded in 1917in response to a call from the national government for food conservation, and incorporated by an Act of Congress on February 24, 1925. The Madera Chapter (no. 62) was established in the aftermath of World War II on September 21, 1948.

The national flower of the American War Mothers is the carnation. Selling carnations to raise funds began in 1923, and, after 1931 the chapters were allowed to keep all the monies collected from their sale, but it was to be used expressly for hospital work, veteran aid or civic welfare. In 1963, the Madera Chapter made $92.77 from the sale of carnations.
